Fall/Winter Cake Class and Wine Night

Last time you heard from me I was unsure of the continuation of my Cake Classes, largely in part because my family was about to relocate several counties over, almost Idaho (omg).  but the Universe felt how disheartened I was, and said ‘no girl, I got you!’ and, now,  we are staying local, woohoo!

I’m partnering up with We Olive and Wine Bar Salt Lake City for a Holiday Season Extravaganza!

I’m teaching 5, yes 5! Holiday themed cake decorating classes from Halloween to New Year’s Eve.

Unlike my other classes, there is no progressive course for these dates, just pick your theme and show up for some laughs, food, and so much fun.

P.S. the fancy watercolor renditions of my cake design are done by the sweetest soul, Elizabeth who owns Oh, Capri Studio!  She does custom commissions and you won’t regret it!

All the class registrations can be found on the Ticketing Platform, Event Bee

October and November Classes are SOLD OUT- click for December registrations

If you are like “hey, what is this cake class and wine night?” I’ve got you covered!

I’ve provided a lovely FAQ and links to photos of past classes

The FAQ Section

What Now?

Registration is available for each class. Watch the announcements through our Partners and on my Instagram @muylymillerco, facebook Muyly Miller Co. and this website, muylymillerco.com Also catch me on KUTV’s Fresh Living ( September and November ) promoting the classes and some quick decorating lessons!

Do I need to come with experience?

Absolutely Not! My cake designs are made so that beginners can easily follow my lead, and advanced decorators can add their own flair- it is for all skill levels.

What Am I Getting?

This concept of decorating cakes while sipping chardonnay popped up in my head one weekend when I realized that, heck, there are a lot of people out there that LOVE to decorate cakes, but have no reason to really decorate a cake. I am giving them a reason- WINE. Just kidding. No the idea is to get together with your pals, socialize, and have a great evening getting creative, learning, eating, and laughing.

For the cost of your registration you are getting:

Full access to the wine bar. Drinks are not included in your registration price- I am not forcing anyone to consume alcohol, so you will need to just bring some extra funds for the drink(s) of your choice, alcoholic or not.

YOU DO GET FOOD! Your attendance gets you yummy food! Appetizers and small bites are included with your registration cost, it supports the cook in the back cause the bar tender shouldn’t have all the fun!?

Supplies are provided- you don’t need to worry about bringing an apron or an offset spatula or a #9 wilton tip. I got ya covered, and you don’t even need to take any of it home- cause honestly, I know you will forget about it and never use that #9 wilton tip again. So come with an open mind and eagerness to learn!

THE CAKE- you take home your own decorated cake, plus any leftover ingredients! YEAH!

Fun, Fun, Fun! I would like to think I am a fun girl, I mean I did come up with this concept. We will have full instruction with observation, music and maybe some story telling that could make you blush. No promises.

Where are the ingredients sourced?

All the cakes will be coming from City Cakes. They are vegan, but we are not doing vegan toppings, icing, etc. frosting, fillings, and embellishments will be sourced from various local markets and sometimes from my own kitchen. Any fillings or frosting made  for sale in my kitchen will be provided a recipe and labeled in accordance to the standards of the Utah Department of Food & Agriculture.

Is my registration refundable?

No, unfortunately they are non refundable registrations. Reason being is that I purchase the amount of supplies needed based upon the number of registrations that come in, I buy them ahead of time and if I had to refund anything, I would lose out on the cost of supplies, time, and a seat that could have been filled. Understandable, right? Registration is not transferable, nor are rain checks allowed.

Why did you choose We Olive & Wine Bar?

Honestly- cause they freakin’ rock! I am a huuuge foodie, I am obsessed with quality ingredients and they simply provide the best sourced selection of oils and vinegars around. Plus they have a wine bar that could accommodate this class, a fringe benefit. For all the attendees the night of the class, they are passing on a 10% discount to their products on the retail side, yet another fringe benefit- woot!

What is the cost for the class?

Each class consumes a different amount of supplies. The cost is reflective of the amount that is needed for your cake. The range for classes will be from $65-$70 depending on the design and supplies needed.

Why are the cakes illustrations on your flyer?

The cakes are illustrated because I haven’t made them yet. I will be doing an IGTV introduction class with real cakes for some of the designs as it approaches the class date. Make sure to catch those on @muylymillerco on Instagram.

Are you a classically trained pastry chef?

No I am not, and boy do I bow in respect to those that are. I am a self-taught baker, a hobbyist, an overachiever who thought this idea of cake decorating inside a wine bar would be bad ass. Though I am not classically trained, I am humbled every time someone asks me to make them a cake for a special occasion, it validates my talent as a baker. I do not bake for a living though- I have an abundant amount of respect for those who do it, it takes a lot of time, planning, discipline, and panache. If you want to know more about me, here is my about me link.

OF COURSE, you can just attend one class, choose the design that really speaks to you, or what all your pals want to do, or the date that works with your schedule.

Fourth of July

My Fourth of July has greater meaning this year as our country’s Families Belong Together movement is so prevalent. As a daughter if immigrants, I am holding onto a burden that is telling me to speak out. What if things were so different for me and my brother, he was 10 at the time.  I can’t even imagine how my brother and I would cope if my mom and dad had to be ‘deported’

Luckily, we didn’t have to face that. Luckily my parents came here with special permission, leaving a horrible dictator in Cambodia. Luckily my parents were wise enough do great things with their lives that provided great things for my brothers ( I have a half-brother)  and I.

My mama heart is broken for these kids who are affected by this rampant deportation activity set in place by Our Leaders. I think I read somewhere that Obamas administration separated about 2000 families during his time, not in a short time like our current administration is doing. I think that the shock is that it seems so much in so little time to me. No matter who does it, the kids are left in a horrible state to mentally assess and forced to accept what is going on around them, and question whether or not reuniting with their family is going to happen. How can your heart not hurt at that thought, the thought of not knowing?

The other thing that drives my logic out of sorts is the number of children who are affected not only in this zero-tolerance policy but the children who were already in a bad circle of influence. I get it, I get there are families who were forced into it for reasons who knows why (money, promises, food, work), or more justifiably are the families leaving an invaded communist regime. But the criminals, the adults who knowingly put their families at risk really madden my soul. As a child, your ability to make decisions for yourself are limited as you continue to grow and navigate a moral compass. If you’re trusted circle is putting you in harms way to begin with, your ability to make free choices is now taken away. How selfish as an adult to take away that from your children!

In the U.S., look at this foster system. How many families are separated because of poor choices by the adults and how often are these kids in and out of this ‘system’ without a clue as to being reunited with their biological parents? I don’t hear of the same magnitude of empathy for our foster families and foster kids in contrast with our border crossing counterparts. Would you want the kids back in their corrupted circles? even though their parents could be involved with drugs, human trafficking, weapon sales etc.  I don’t know what the solution is, but this is a real question that probably struck a chord.

Please appreciate and respect the resources and freedoms given. This includes marching as one voice for the future of our country, this includes holding steadfast to your core beliefs no matter the bipartisan views.

I know this typed post is a little all over the place. My place isn’t to sway you one way or another. But this Independence Day, I am a bit more charged I guess. I am a daughter of immigrants who had smart parents who did the things the right way to continue to give, now to their grandchildren, a great life in the Land of the Free.37

Brunch with Target

I love a relaxin brunch day. And it’s so easy when you have amazing serving platters and utensils from Target. Today was all about simplicity. A fresh summer celery and plum salad with feta, olives, and almonds brightens up the platter. Oui has been one of my favorite lines of yogurt from Yoplait, and you can’t have Oui without a nod to the classic French Croissants. Hard boiled eggs and a seed and dried fruit granola to top our creamy yogurt with finishes this light brunch.

Watermelon Party

Charlotte’s 3rd Birthday!

watermelon1

I had such a blast planning this party for my Char-bug. It was also bittersweet cause it’s a reality check that your kids are growing older.

I can tell I am going to love this age, she is already a smart, sassy, and fun girl.

Lets talk balloons! I knew I wanted lots of them and I knew I didn’t want to just tape them up sparsely in the room. So I decided to do a dramatic balloon arch.

w13

I purchased the disposable helium tank that Zurchers carry, and supplemented my watermelon balloon pack from Amazon with  more balloons from Zurchers, including the giant 3.

My tip on creating the bundled balloon look is tying them all onto one string while you are inflating them. I kept a really long ribbon out and tied each balloon to the string starting from the bottom up, spacing them about 5-6 inches.

When assembling the arch start on one end and then add your giant number and then tape the end of the arch meeting with the larger balloon and create balance by taping where needed.

w11w7

Another item I wanted was fresh flowers, I asked Native Flower Company to create something that would go with the theme and it turned out so perfect! I died when I saw the arrangement!

w3

One of the first things I ordered were my cake and my macarons from The Blonde Who Bakes. This is the 6th cake I have ordered from her! whether for clients weddings, shoots, or for my own family, that is how much I lover her desserts!

watermelon2w8w5

And in addition to these sweets, I wanted even more sweets! So I asked Marcia with Sweet Cravings, who is the guru of cake pops, to make me watermelon cake pops, and they even tasted like watermelon!

w4

No sweet was left un touched, and they were a hit from young to old!

Other details included a bag of watermelon seeds that were really cocoa puffs, with a tag  with directions “best watered with milk in you favorite cereal bowl”, and fun napkins, watermelon feta and mint salad with balsamic, and black and white to ground the design, seen in the fabric and the salt and pepper shakers.

w9w6w10 Also, watermelon wedges on a stick. score the rind with a paring knife so the sticks go in easier, but don’t go too far into the flesh cause then it gets to be a wet sticky mess.

I hope I was able to inspire your next watermelon party! I know this could have gone in more directions, but I think I did just the right amount and avoided going overboard and cheesy!

Happy Birthday to my sweet Charlotte! We love you!

P.S Dress is also from Amazon
